Pietenpol-List: Rib Question

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Capstrip steamingHi all,I have been reading all the posts regarding cap strip steaming. I did not discover this list until after I had all my ribs done. When I began rib assembly, I tried the first one without steaming anything and it did not break,so I just continued on with the rest, only once having the top cap strip break. Then I went to Brodhead and was told by one old-timer that sometimes the cap strips will break AFTER the airplane is complete and flying. This scared me, but I did not want to start over, so I surmised that if I just soaked the noses of all my rids in a bucket overnight, this would relieve the stresses. Idid this, and observed that two of the top cap strips had broken overnight whenbeing soaked. So I had to make two new ribs to replace those two. I am confident that I will be OK with this salvage procedure. After I was all doneI saw in one of the Bingelis books a real simple jig for forming the bend on thetop cap strip, which consisted of just a 2 x 4 cut on a curve with a jig saw.The rib is soaked or steamed then clamped to the curve on the 2 x 4. Hello, i am new here........i am currently finishing a Pietenpol my dad startedback in the 70's, it is 60% complete needing only the wing and covering. Hisengine choice of the day was a 1928 chevy truck engine which is currently installed. The plane has been sitting for 25 yrs since the engines last run with thehead off. After searcing for different engine choices, i stumbled across thispost, and i believe this engine (GM 1600) is the obvious choice. I have triedto purchase this engine with no luck. Has anyone been able to find a sourcewho will sell this engine? I will gladly join in someones purchase to possiblyby multiples at one time. Anyone else having the same problems? (I have beentrying to buy the engine through my company for INDUSTRIAL use i have never mentionedVEHICLE or AIRPLANE)Chris RuschRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2008 10:08:42 -0700

>I have 3 sets of the full size rib drawings and all of them are 1/8' shorter then the 27 3/4' spar distance. I think this is a problem??Are the Air Camper's ribs the same as the Sky Scouts?----Matt-Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... 1#394931le, List Admin.________________________________________________________________________________

Me three. There's a huge misconception that power tools enable you to do nicerwork, and makes it easier.Generally, not true. Learning to use the power tool is about the same as learningto use the hand tool, but burns up a lot more material in the process! Verygeneric use of them, like to rip rough stock to width, is an exception obviously.A nice little hand plane (think Stanley 100 series, or the 60 1/2) will do TONSof work, easily and effortlessly and will never risk an entire assembly due toone small glitch. You tend to sneak up on the right size, or whatever and can correct as you go.Once you're a little proficient, it's many times faster than reconfiguring thepower tool, cheaper than buying the tooling, etc. When I first started woodworking I realized I could afford the nicest chisels madeon earth (hand forged Barr chisels, about $80 ea, albeit expensive, amortizedover 60 years, cheap - then they'll outlive my son, and maybe his) which cando about ANY operation, while the nicest bandsaw, tablesaw, shaper combined,in AMATEUR grade would run over a grand, without tooling. Very few people havequit woodworking because of a chisel injury as well, not so with tablesaws...Professional power tools in the same class as the chisels, about $15 grandEACH...These days, whatever hand tool you're interested in gaining some insight on, justgo to youtube. Handsaws, linear stroke. Hand planes, lap the bottom flat.Chisels, sharpen the BACK as well... etc.I'm pretty sure I could trim all those ribs with my $3 stanley 102 (flea marketfind) quicker than most could set up a router table, get the bit height set (ifyou're using a bevel), make some practice runs, etc. AND I could do it inmy living room watching TV, clean the mess up with a rat tail and a dustpan andcarry on a conversation and drink a beer safely.Using these versatile, small and affordable hand tools is a nice cartharsis aswell.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Rib Question

If it was mine, I would cut the drawings in half, add a sheet of paper inback, and re-align at the proper spar distance (add 1/8").Gary BootheNX308MB-----Original Message-----

I think power tools can really help, but in my case they can ruin a part twiceas fast as a hand tool if you don't practice on some scrap material first.--------Building steel fuselage aircamper.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Rib Question
