Here is some info that may be of interest to you fellows looking into wire wheels. It comes from a post on the Corben Aces group.Enjoy, -Wayne"Gentleman,A few years back, there was an astonishing amount of research on this subject, which was accomplished by a number of members of the "Flitzer" group. The quest was an affordable solution for a structurally sound, functional and light weight wheel and tire combination, that would appropriately enhance the post 1920's aesthetics of the "Flitzer" aircraft series, as magnificently designed and engineered by Lynn Williams in the U.K.I would highly recommend, that any constructor of a "Period" look aircraft, visit the Flitzer Sportflug Verein (Flitzer Sport Flying Association) site at http://www.flitzerbiplane.com - .There is no fee for joining the group and membership will give you access to all the postings, regarding, among other things, the wire wheels, tires and the amazing brake system, designed, manufactured and available from Ian Wasey, also in the U.K.. Also discussed in detail are tools, fabric and covering systems, engines (STC typed,VW conversions, COvair conversions, etc,), and about everything it takes to build an aircraft. The "Flitzer" group is one of , if not the most dedicated and unusual groups that I have encountered in my 40+ years in aviation. The wealth of knowledge, plus the willingness to share that knowledge, is extraordinary, as you will discover, as construction issues are resolved within the group.Blake Palmer in Texas, is the "Webmeister" and site administrator, and has done an outstanding job of maintaining and archiving all of the data, email and photos for the group.Again, I cannot stress how beneficial this sight can be to your projects.By the way, my interest in the Corben goes back to the early 70's. My dear friend, Capt. Richard Anger (EAL), and was aka at the Flying Circus Aerodrome in Bealton, Virginia. as the dastardly and nefarious "Black Baron", would perform an amazing act in his Corben. It was of course, a comedy routine, which was one of the audiences most popular acts at the FCA.The Corben was modified to "resemble" a Fokker D- VII, elephant ears and all. The crowds loved it!! Dick did not baby that Corben, and it just flew and flew. We members of the Circus, gained a great respect for the Corben. We often joked that Dick "couldn't break it" and that his A/C gave him the most "bang for the buck"!! After Dick's passing, his son, Tony Anger, carried on the "Black Baron" tradition at the CIrcus for a few years.I noticed in a posting awhile back, that a member of the Corben group, was in the process of restoring Dick's old Corben. All I can say to the new owner, is that you got a hell of a good airplane, with a great history, and that I am sure you will have hundreds of happy flying hours in the old girl!!Regards and Happy Landings,Steve HoffmannFlying Circus AIrshows, Inc.
