Subject: Pietenpol-List: airspeeds on final approachI've experimented with various airspeeds on final and I can divide my resultsup into a few simple categories: Power-off approach: 60 mph indicated: very steep angle to keep speed up, a few seconds in the flare/roundoutto feel for the runway55 mph indicated: still a steep angle too keep speed up but not as dramatic. Less time in the flare, not much at all. Power-on slightly approach60 mph indicated: Chopping the power as you roundout. Lots of time in the floatand a much shallower approach angle.55 mph indicated: Chopping the power as you roundout. Less time in the floatand same shallower approach angle. The first few times I landed my plane I flared high and plunked it in a bit. You have to get a lot lower thanyou think to touch down nicely in a Pietenpol and if you flare too high you'regoing to drop out onto the runwaybecause there's much drag associated with our planes so they don't nearly floatlike a Champ, Taylorcraft, or Luscombemight. Lastly-I have used 50 mph indicated on power off approaches to fly into a friends1,300' strip and boylet me just say that you have to round out right next to Mother Earth and expectmilliseconds in the float:) ________________________________________________________________________________

I was working on the instrument panel lastweek and my wife walked into the shop. As she was sweeping up (ok, I made up that first part) but she did look at the panel and say "when are yougoing to stop changing that thing and just install it and move ahead?".....Not only is it fantastic that she's encouraging me to keep going but....she actually notices what I'm working on and what's going on with it...wow. I didn't actually realize she was paying that much attention. She once considered taking weekly pictures of my shop to see if any newtools showed up in "this week's picture" that weren't in "last week's picture"....she didn't but probably should have! And anytime I order a tool and try to justify the expense with "But I won't spend much since I'm getting it at Harbor Freight or wherever..." she always says no, let's spend the money and get ONLY quality tools. I had to sell my Piet project during the divorce of my trainer wife. I actuallyshed a tear as it went down the road(the Piet not the wife). Several years laterwhile Sue and I were at Brodhead and just a couple weeks before our wedding.I found out that my Piet was again up for sale due to health problems withthe owner. My newfound love not only suggested that I buy it back but offeredit as a wedding gift to me. I was dumbfounded. I am keeping both of them for lifethis time around. Sue is extremely supportive of my working on the Piet andwill often suggest that I go out to work in the shop because she knows thatmakes me happy. She gets the first ride too!--------PAPA MIKERead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________
