Pietenpol-List: Leading edge fillerstrips

You will need to make an intermediate pivot point just behind the seat. Check out Gary Boothe's pictures on www.westcoastpiet.com and see how he did it. Very nicely done.Just make sure you don't change the control travel-geometry.-Nothing wrong with cables and pulleys per the plans but the push/pull tube will clean up the cockpit nicely.-Greg C.----- Original Message -----

well, the filler strips are in the plans, and otherwise there is nothing for the rear of the plywood to nail to other than the ribs. For me, leaving it out is not an option, I think it would "buckle" between the ribs even forward of the spar and I do not think that would look good.Gene ----- Original Message -----

Michael,I used a push/pull system on my Piet. Check out Page 11 of the build photoson http://www.cpc-world.com. You can also see the trim wheel and springsystem.Everything worked well but the rotation on the torque tube when usingaileron (and hence the rotation of the control rods) caused one rod end onthe rod between the control stick and the intermediate lever to slacken off.It was not a problem other than one rod end was not lock nutted. Page threeof the build photos shows the system in greater detail (the side ply is noton the side of the fuse) so I hope you can understand how it all fitstogether No problems were encountered in flight.CheersPeterWonthaggi Australiahttp://www.cpc-world.com

As Mikee said... don't let the weight issue deter youfrom using the 3-piece wing. Corky was able to build41CC to an empty weight of right around 630 lbs. withthe 3-piece wing and I think that's a pretty good weight.Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net ________________________________________________________________________________

Michael: you can see the bungee trim system that Ihave on 41CC here:http://www.flysquirrel.net/piets/trim.htmlReally all it does is apply some nose-down bias tothe elevators to make them a bit lighter. SomePiets can be tail-heavy and 41CC is no exception. The airplane does not fly hands-off in any trim orloading condition but this bungee makes the elevatorlighter and reduces stick forces. Although it wasmade to be adjustable, I've never adjusted after itwas installed and set. I'm sure the cheap bungeeis losing its bungee-ness over time, so I'll need toreplace it at some point.Corky flew 41CC with a bungee from the pilot's seat, around the stick, and back. Sliding it up or downthe stick provided a varying amount of back-sticktrim. I have no pictures of that setup and the onlytime I really notice that I need to hold back stickin cruise flight is for the first hour or so afterI fill the fuel tank, which is in the nose.Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net ________________________________________________________________________________

Mikee- it's Mexico, not the U.S., that has put inplace the UHF ELT requirement. Sorry if I wasn'tclear when I made the statement. Still not mandatoryhere in the States (other rules apply; I'm strictlytalking about existing installations in existingairplanes).Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: reinforced "end" ribsDate: Sat, 3 Oct 2009 12:07:37 -0400

no, it is for the whole wing. I don't even have plans for the 3-piece wing, everything I have is for the one piece wing. The filler strips go between every rib to give the plywood something to glue to on the aft end, and I can understand why.Gene ----- Original Message -----

Hi Gene,I have the 1933 / 1934 plans for the one-piece wing and the filler strips are only shown for the center of the wing where the fuel tank is placed. The filler strips are on both the front and rear spars to keep the fabric fair as it covers the fuel tank. The plywood is not a structural component and only needs to be attached to the ribs. The aft end of the plywood needs to be able to be pulled down between the ribs as the fabric is tightened to prevent a sharp transition.200+ hours on NX18235 (Pietenpol airfoil) with no filler strips and good flying qualities.Cheers,Greg ----- Original Message -----

My plans are dated, "1937", but the wing page is dated, "3-3-34". It shows"Filler strips" where the fuel tank is located (one piece wing), but nowhereelse.I'm building the 3-piece wing, which provides a supplemental page for thecenter section only. It is dated, "January 10, 1975," and revised on, "March13, 1982." It shows no filler strips at all in the center section, or theadjoining wing parts (not very much shown). The filler strips seemednecessary for the center section with fuel tank, so I put them in. I agree with Greg that the transition will be much smoother without fillerstrips on the wings (they are not shown anyhow)..my 2 cents..Gary BootheCool, Ca.PietenpolWW Corvair Conversion, mountedTail done, Fuselage on gear(15 ribs down.) _____

Jim wrote->Mine with the 3 piece and 65 Cont. weighs 607#Excellent! I know I could get 41CC down to thatweight. It's got a vertical speed indicator, gyro turn and bank, and venturi, along with a fewother things that add weight but could easily bedispensed with. Six hundred pounds is not a badtarget to shoot for with an A65 on the nose. For the benefit of those who might not have seen it, the very first issue of theBuckeye Pietenpol Newsletter (July 1983), talks about about the use of fillerstrips. Here is what was written: "In covering the top leading edge of yourwing, don't be tempted to use aluminum, nor to provide a strip to hold up therear of the plywood between the ribs. That's how it should be - unsupported. You'll find that method, which is shown on the plans, provides a smooth airfoil, without the abrupt change in surface you get by having that rear edge rigid."Sage advice from the past.PaulRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Sun, 4 Oct 2009 11:15:11 -0500 (GMT-05:00)
