Since my Oshkosh/Brodhead plans came crashing to a halt last nite, I'm having to resign myself to just Sun n Fun this year. Anyone going with their Piet? The last time I talked with W. Wynne,(The Corvair Authority) he was planning on having a booth, so if anyone is there with interest in Corvair power, keep an eye out for him.Larry RaganJacksonville, Fl.lragan(at)hotmail.com________________________________________________________________________________

Well...... Sun n Fun is quickly approaching ( 11 more days). All six of the BigPiet builders are going. Is anyone planning a get together? Maybe for lunch?Or maybe meet at a certain place at a certain time? Just wondering.I have not printed off a forum list yet, so I won't suggest anything until I seethe days and times of the forums. It might be a good idea to meet just aftera Piet oriented forum at the pavilion at the front of the museum. Just a thought.Barry Davis________________________________________________________________________________

As long as the list is a bit slow and hopefully every one is catching their breath from the wonderful week of milk jug discussion, I want to remind everyone that several of us on the list here are active with the Wood workshop at Sun n Fun. You may catch a bit of Mike Cuys Piet video running on the shop TV. Someone always has Piet plans and we will all help with questions. This years project is the construction of a set of wood wings at the show. They are very similar to the Piet. I ould also like to talk to anyone who would like to build a project at next years show. We have done several Aircamper fuselages in the past and would welcome another if someone would like.We welcome new volunteers to the shop also. It's a great way to be more invoved and get more out of the airshow.Dick N.________________________________________________________________________________Date: Thu, 13 Mar 2008 06:18:24 -0400

It's time to start thinking about spring. Does anyone want to jump start a project? We are looking for a project for the Wood Forum at Sun n Fun. You could bring materials and drive away with a completed basic fuselage or a set of wings, one left and one right at the end of the show. Let me know if you would like to discuss further how to take the next step. There are several of us from the list who participate and help.Dick N.________________________________________________________________________________Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: Sun n FunDate: Tue, 13 Jan 2009 13:47:47 -0500

JimYou are already familiar with the workshops so that's a plus. You need to settle most of the questions yourself. You would have to commit the time to the Wood shop to do this. I do know the only paperwork along the way is to keep a builders log and keep receipts for materials. You will need tail feathers, regardless of other decisions.Let us knowDick----- Original Message -----

Michael,I haven't built this part yet, but I don't see why it would need to be streamlinetube. Plain ol' round tube with the ends "squished" should work just fine.Flat steel would to be too heavy, since you'd need to have such a thick bar toavoid flexing. The whole reason for streamlined tubing being streamlined is toreduce wind resistance, which should NOT be an issue inside the fuselage. Myguess is that BHP just made use of offcuts that were on hand, since it's sucha short piece needed.Bill C.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... 056#28005= - The Pietenpol-List Email Forum -http://www.matronics.com/Na============ ... et>Michael, I sent you a pic a while back, but no dimensions of my elevator idler bellcrank.- In fact, I made it from streamline tubing, and would again, but its shape is no longer "streamline."- It started as streamline tubing 2.25" long axis with about 1.00" outside across.- I squeezed it uniformly to make it 2.50" long and 0.75" across.- This made an oval tubing section about 4 inches tall.- Then I cut notches in the top and cross-drilled holes up there.- Now bearing ends can fit into those slots.- At the top then, are the tubes from the yoke and from the main elevator bellcrank. The bearings themselves are trapped by the tubing, with a bolt through the tubing and the bearing center, as you might expect.- When all was done, I had room for the bearing ends inside the length of tubing, with room to spare.---At the base I have a piece of half-inch round tubing welded going crossways, mounted between two ball bearings and heavy aluminum (extruded) angles.- It is all very smooth and rigid.- Corky told me to widen the footprint of this apparatus and make it more rigid than his prototype, and I did.- It is overkill, but I like it. I think Dick N. used a piece of rectangular tubing in the same way on one of his Piets, and I would have too, if I had seen his design first and had the tubing handy.- As with much else on Piets, I used what I had, without cutting corners on specs of materials, strength, or quality. I went ahead and bought a short length of the specified airfoil tubing.- If you decide to use round tubing, be sure to select a diameter large enough to accommodate the axle that has to go through it, without being structurally weak.- It could ruin your whole day if that thing failed. Now that we are past the first of the year and Sun n Fun is about 97 days away, it's time again for me to ask if anyone has a project they would like to have jump started.Several of us here on the list gather each year to demonstrate wood building at the show. You would have help from several experienced builders and take home parts that would leave you far ahead on your building. In the past, I have received big help with my projects. We built a set of wings for Skip Gadd, a fuselage for Gardiner Mason and various projects for others. I don't have anything definite yet for this year and if you would like to make some big progress on your project in 1 week, contact me off list and I will fill you in on what to expect and what you will need.Dick N.horzpool(at)goldengate.net ________________________________________________________________________________Date: Mon, 4 Jan 2010 17:09:17 -0500 (EST)

Only problem I see is you can't adjust your leading edge up and down.- IF, the stab were built stiffer, it would not be as much an issue, however the pietenpol tail is a light flimsy structure, that needs proper bracing.- My oppinion is to at least have 2 seperate cables, with at least 1 being adjustable.- For the added $30-$40 just make them per the plans with-all having turnbuckles.- I think you will save much heart ache and time just biting the bullet and buying the turnbuckles.- As far as saving some $$$$, Just substitute motercycle chain links for the clevises, if in doubt about the strength, try pulling them with a tractor, thy won't break before the clevis pin.- NX92GB has a few chain links in place of clevises, and they will hold all day long.-Shad-p.s. Clear 2" 3M tape from Wal Mart. Applied from the bottom, carefully tucking thetape up into the gap. Had originally put it on top but was reading on the flybaby list about tape coming off the top and creating roll control excitement. So far so good, barely noticeable, inexpensive, easy to maintain and durable.Kevin PurteeRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Tue, 5 Jan 2010 07:08:02 -0800 (PST)

Cables have a minimum diameter for going around bends. See pulleys for that. You'll need to ensure that the cables can't move in either direction around that pivot. They've got to be completely captured. A few sailboats lost their masts when they tried this, before they learned that. David Paule ----- Original Message -----

Multiple cables prevents the compromizing of the whole system should one individual fail. With your proposed system it compromizes the structure of the entire structure should the single cable fail.Just a thought:Michael ----- Original Message -----

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Using half of the tail cables? Stits polyfiber through and through. It's pretty durable. Hadn't thought aboutpulling paint off.Fly baby website has notes on using clear 90 degree plastic angle as gap seals.
