Pietenpol-List: Circuit breakers

if any of you have installed circuit breakers to your coils on Corvair conversionsI'd like to hear what you used.I have the coil switcher with 2 coils and 2ignition switches.but I'm thinking at a minimum I will install individual panelmounted fuses that can be easily changed from the seat.no doubt should getbreakers but then I am still a tightwad and with the dual coils if one shortsit probably wouldn't stay reset anyway.what's the opinions? and what kind of amprating? Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Circuit breakersFuses and circuit breakers are used to protect the wire not the device. If the wire was to short the current needs to be interrupted so the insulation does not burn. If you are using #14 wire 15 amp would be the max.I don't have it listed in my book but I think #16 wire would be 10 amp. You could use two breakers If you wanted separate systems. As far as current drain on the coils you could check it with a meter. My guess is that a coil would draw less than one ampere. Yes my switcher is also MSD I believe. DJ had it rigged up when I bought the project.I'm going over things and trying to clean up loose connections,un-finishedparts and such. mainly want protection to prevent a fire.all of it is rightin there with the fuel tank so figure even gliding like a brick is better thana flaming arrow.I'm thinking that a 10 amp breaker of fuse would be preferableto letting a shorted wire burn in two in there. and I do need to verify thewiring gage for sure.RaymondRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

After years of lurking about the matronics site, going to Oshkosh anddreaming about building an airplane I have taken the plunge. My plansarrived today and I am now officially building a piet. While planning my first order to Aircraft Spruce and pouring over the plansand some builders web sites I have a question about spar size. I have seenseveral mentions of the spar width of =BE inches and the plans show spar widthof 1 inch with some sections routed for weight savings. I was going toorder section of spar to aid in rib jig construction and to test fit theribs onto to check for consistency of my build. I figured I would use thesection of spar later for the center section if I decided to go with thethree piece wing. What width spar are you using?Myron AndersonPlans in hand and preparing to make ribs.________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: New builder already needs helpDate: Fri, 12 Mar 2010 06:21:48 -0500

Spar size is builder's choice. 3/4" will be less expensive to purchase.Decide on your spar size and then build the ribs accordingly.Greg CardinalMinneapolis ----- Original Message -----

Looking at the AeroMax Corvair Service and Operations Manual, the wiringdiagram shows a 3amp Breaker between the A/B switch(we used a ON/ON switch)and the coils (one for each coil). That is the way we did ours. I alwayspull these out if there are a lot of kids around and I can't watch the BigPiet every minute.Barry DavisBig PietNX973BPThe pic shows the switch and breakers labled "P" and "E" for points andelectronic (also marked the coils P&E, every little bit helps later on). The40amp breaker is for the alternator. Hope this helps.-----Original Message-----
