Pietenpol-List: Re: GN-1 cabane length
Rick and others,It looks like the concensus for Piet plans is 1" longer for the front. I willhave to do some looking at my Piet plans (I have both Piet and GN-1 drawings)and see what 1" does as far as the angle of incidence. I will report back. Seemslike with a few GN-1 builders out there it would be good to settle this asthere is no support from Don Grega.
Just to put a cap on this, I measured both the GN-1 airfoil and Piet airfoil andput the dimensions in Cad so I could measure the angle of incidence with differentlength cabanes. Here is what I found.GN-1 with equal length struts front and back the angle of incidence is 1.75 degrees.GN-1 with front struts 5/8" longer than rear the angle is 3 degreesPiet with front struts 1" longer than rear (accepted standard) is 3.25 deg.My GN-1 struts are equal length and I am going to leave them that way and try them.I have figured and easy way to add length if I need to without buildingnew struts.Jon C.--------Jon Coxwell GN-1 BuilderRecycle and preserve the planetRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Has the engine in question been converted to aircraft use? If so, that could change the discussion and question of value considerably.Wayne Bressler Jr.Taildraggers, Inc.taildraggersinc.comOn Mar 26, 2010, at 4:09 PM, hvandervoo(at)aol.com wrote:>> Yes, it is a Ground Power Unit, used as generator engine in Airforce>> Single downdraft Stromberg on top of the engine.>> I have one, bought three years ago for $400.-- partial rebuild and > converted for aircraft use.>> I would not pay $ 1,500.-- for this>> Just my 2 c>>> Hans> Corvair powered NX15KV>>> -----Original Message-----

Tim..There was a big rush to buy these GPU engines and convert them for air work back in the '60s. All were military surplus and had varying numbers of hours of service on them. I vaguely remember reading more than a few articles on the conversion requirements in Sport Aviation articles from the time. Surly, a quick search of the Sport Aviation archives (online @ EAA) would reveal the posts. My dim memory of the subject nags that the application of this power plant was a marginal benefit to air work compared to other available engines-primarily due to its high weight to HP output ratio. However, due to it's cheap acquisition cost back then many guys made a go of it.Al Lyscars----- Original Message -----

In the '60s, those were Lycoming O-290s. Different engine, different issues ,but there might be similar issues with the current crop of GPUs.Some of the issues were converting the ignition to dual magnetos, converting the induction to an updraft carb with mixture control, and whittling down a mounting boss on teh front of the case to save weight. Oh, and the starter ring gear wasn't there, nor the starter, both needed to be acquired. The sludge tubes in the crank were totally full of sludge, I remember, so that mandated a full overhaul with extra emphasis on cleaning passageways. And the crankshaft prop flange tended to crack. Eventually a flange beef-up kit was available that seemed to fix that problem.Sounds like a lot of work, but probably not much different, all in all, than converting a Model A. Just remember that when you open the crate, you'd be getting a project, not a flyable airplane engine.David PauleThere was a big rush to buy these GPU engines and convert them for air work back in the '60s.
