Its taken 8 months to get here. Had hoped to get 200 hours in the 1st year butlife keeps getting in the way.Mechanically, most the bugs have been worked out.Im a little surprised at how quickly its gotten nicked, scratched and worn by routineuse, mostly as a result of bugs, vibration and Young Eagles.Realistic performance numbers with the Corvair:Static RPM: 2650 (this was with the original pitch. I changed it & then went backto it.)2500 RPM = 72 mph 2600 RPM = 77 mphLevel flight, WOT gives 2750 RPM and 85 mphRate of climb with just me: vigorous (~700 fpm on a cool day at sea level.)Rate of climb with a full grown passenger: dignified (havent measured.)Fuel burn: 5 gphStock fuel tank makes for short legs and lots of fuel stops, especially with headwinds.Flight numbers:Take off: pretty quick tail up in ~100 feet, off the ground in ~250Stall: really slowFinal: ~60 mphLanding: pretty slowRoll out: pretty shortCross countries:2 day trips at 400 miles all day affairsSeveral 200 mile tripsNumber of landings: ~350 (several with the motor stopped, intentionally, for practicein carefully controlled situations. Behaves the same as with the engineat idle.)Number of attempted ground loops: severalNumber of successful ground loops: 0It likes to be wheel-landed.Number of passengers: 13 different people (8 Young Eagles)Kevin PurteeRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Sun, 16 May 2010 20:20:41 -0400

I overhauled my Stromberg using the stainless steel needle valve and found agood way to make the valve seat perfectly so it doesn't drip. Chuck theneedle in your drill press. Coat it with Crest toothpaste which is mildlyabrasive and as the drill press spins the needle, press the valve seatagainst the needle with the toothpaste on it to "lap" in the valve seat. Itwill polish it to match the conical surface of the needle perfectly and makea tight seal.Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC-----Original Message-----
