I am still not happy with the requirements for a transponder to be installed onan aircraft with an electrical system. I am looking for an affordable plug-instyle mag for my Corvair.I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that mightbe running a mag on a Corvair.or someone that might have one to sell or trade.Iwonder if there would be any way to have a for sale or trade section with thissite like the Kansas city Dawn patrol does but probably not since it doesn'tseem to be the same type of site. as you can tell I am not very computer literate.butI have several items that I am not using that might be of use to otherbuilders like probably most on this site do.so if you know anywhere to finda mag for some more reasonable price that the race shops Id appreciate a headsup.RaymondRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Landing gear height

I am going to start my main landing gear this week I hope. The only height I canfind on the drawings is 51" to the top of the top longeron with it level. Thatseems pretty high. You builders out there chime in here. I am using 21" spokewheels but that should not be an issue. I assume using 6.00 X 6 tires it wouldbe the same. Can't find anything in the archives. I would like some feedbackon this.--------Jerry Dotson59 Daniel Johnson RdBaker, FL 32531Started building NX510JD July, 2009Ribs and tailfeathers doneusing Lycoming O-235Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Sun, 11 Jul 2010 21:58:36 -0400

Jerry,I'll measure tomorrow, but my method (also with 21" Harley Sportster wheels)was to set the upper longeron angle at 13 deg, and establish the length ofthe landing gear struts from there (tailwheel needs to be installed). I didnot follow the widely accepted, Chris Tracy up-side-down method, for noother reason than laziness, but the process of cutting all the struts onlytook a couple hours on a table saw.Rolling it out the door for the first time is a great feeling....best ofluck to you!Gary BootheCool, CAPietenpolWW Corvair ConversionTail done, Fuselage on gear20 ribs done-----Original Message-----

Mine is 52" to the top of top longeron with 3.50X19wheels. Don't forget that the engine centerline isbelow the longeron. mine is down 4". So that makes47" to the center of the prop. If you have a 72" propthen the tip is only 11" from the ground until youhave a hard encounter in a level attitude. :-)And don't say it'l never happen. How many times I'veheard those words and........ Jerry;Depending on how much air is in the tires and howmuch fuel is in the tank, in the level flightattitude 41CC sits with the top of the top longeronanywhere from 51-54" so it sounds like that 51"dimension from the plans is pretty accurate.I could lift the tail and measure it but I won'tbe back at the hangar until Saturday.41CC has 6.00x6s on the mains.Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net ________________________________________________________________________________Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2010 13:17:08 -0500

Jerry wrote->Thanks all for the replies. I will make it 51".>Guess I will make a handicap stool so I can get in!Jerry, please note the previous replies. That height tothe top of the top longeron is with the fuselage LEVEL,in the cruise flight position. When the airplane is onthe ground in the 3-point attitude, the cockpit is MUCHlower than this and it is very easy to step right into thecockpit if you have a fuselage step and grab handles, ora routine where you grab the cabanes to lift yourself in.There is absolutely no need for stools, steps, or otherassistance to get into the cockpit when the airplane issitting on the ground. I am 5'-9", don't have long legs, and have no problem stepping up into the cockpit with thelittle side peg that Corky built into the side of thecockpit on 41CC down at the lower longeron, but it can alsobe done without that.Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net _________________________________________________________________The New Busy think 9 to 5 is a cute idea. Randy, I went through the exact same thing about a month ago with my newly purchasedGN-1. After a week of research, the only tube under $100 that I could find wasfrom Wicks: TUBE 15-600X6 90 VLV Part Number: TB100-7090 (6" WHEEL) (TB100-7090)Retail Price: $8.11 It's not a 6 ply tube, but a 4 ply. Everybody I talked to said this is just finefor our application. I got a dissertation from the local EAA chapter presidenton tube technology - and how aircraft certified tubes haven't really keptup with the current technology due to cost of recertification (they still leakdue to older compounds). The above tube from Wicks is actually for a lawn tractor.I was skeptical about it, till I realized that it is what was on before(that I accidentally cut to pieces while changing the tire). No problems on theprevious one that was multiple years old -and I've got a solid month of beginnerslandings on the new one with no problem.--------Lorin MillerWaiex N81YXGN-1 N30PPRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

What? How did I get dragged into this? Anyway seeing as I am wasting time onthe computer and not building, I guess I should chime in here. The attachedword document is how I came up with the deck angle of 13 degrees. My deck angle turned out to be 12 (with the anticipated sag of the bungeecords). Also, my plane sits very high with the tall wheels. ChrisSacramento, CaWestcoastpiet.com _____

Randy, go to your local hardware store, Home Depot or lawnmower shop, even O'Rieleys auto parts has some lawn mower parts. A 6 x 6.00 tube is a common lawn tractor size. Should cost around $8.00. They are a 4 ply instead of 6 ply but many of us have been using them and with no problem so far. We just put them on our chapt. 64 Piet. Wicks even sells them. Well, well. My faith in aviators and experimentershas been restored! After posting an email about howI had loaned one of my cast aluminum Air Camper Corvairvalve covers to Gary Gower down in Guadalajara andnever hearing back from him, last night I DID hearback from him and was offered a complete explanationof what happened with the valve cover and that itis still in his hands, safe and sound. My apologiesto Gary and to the aviation community for castingdoubt on the good character of any one of us whobuilds, flies, and dreams. I have every confidencethat I will be getting my valve cover back.I have found very, very few "bad apples" in experimentalaviation. To the contrary, I am continually surprisedwhen complete strangers offer me parts, materials, and assistance of every type... many times at no cost.Gary is just another one of "us", and I apologize forany negative comment that I may have made about hischaracter or honesty. Now to find someone who can source these cast coversfor us and turn out an equally nice, non-porous,lightweight, and affordable casting...
