Pietenpol-List: Smoke On!

Now Mike Cuy and Chuck Gantzer aren=92t the only ones who can smoke =91em. Ihave added a smoke system to my Pietenpol and after being disappointed withthe initial results, I have tweaked the installation with a larger oilsupply line and now have outstanding smoke.I used a 3.5 gallon outboard motor fuel tank which is positioned on thefloor between the front rudder pedals. When flying passengers I will simplyremove the tank (it is held in place with a bungee cord), disconnect thequick-disconnect on the outboard motor fuel line and get the tank out of theway. When I want to smoke =91em, I fill the tank with used automatictransmission fluid (cost ' nothing, as opposed to the =93real smoke oil=94,Texaco Canopus 13, that Mike Cuy uses for $582 a 55 gallon drum, or the babyoil that Chuck favors at an even higher price). Then I reposition the tankon the floor board, stretch the bungee cord around to hold it in place, reconnect the tank=92s quick disconnect and give the primer bulb a couple ofsqueezes to prime the smoke oil into the line. The system is powered by an automobile windshield washer pump mounted on thefirewall, with a momentary push button on the instrument panel to energizethe pump. From the pump, I ran a line that uses about 12=94 of black rubberhose (which came with the pump) and then transitions to =BC=94 stainless steeltubing that runs to a port welded into the exhaust stack of # 1 cylinder.I just did a quick test of it this morning before the predicted storms rollin, but will do a more extensive test next week, with pictures and video. Iwant to find out just how much smoke 3.5 gallons of transmission fluid canmake.Maybe I need to put the same system on my RV-4=85Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC________________________________________________________________________________Date: Fri, 28 May 2010 09:47:47 -0500 (GMT-05:00)

Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: Smoke On!Fantastic report Jack. I'm thrilled for you. You'll have a BLAST with that system. One thing I love to do on super calm nights before sunset is to cruise in level flight, lay a track of smoke then do a strong pulling turn left or right. You look over your shoulder and can see how the horizontal tail vortices swirl the smoke until it curls in on itself like you see in low, fast moving storm clouds. Another cool thing to do is a 60 degree steep turn with smoke. When you run into your own smoke at the 360 degree point you know your altitude didn't stray and you'll hit your wake/ propwash. Now you've got me thinking (once I finally run out of my last 5 gallon container of smoke oil) about switching to used transmission fluid. What say you now about the color quality of the smoke ? White, off white, gray white, ?I only carry =BD gallon of smoke oil but if I would have to guess I can lay 7 or so swaths approximately 3,000 feet in length with that so I'm hoping that with your 3.5 gallons you'll be able to smoke like crazy for a long time. One thing you might want to avoid is smoking at lower throttle settings. Two things happen. You get raw fluid mixed with smoke because the your EGT isn't hot enough to fully vaporize the flow and two, the raw fluid reduces the life of the rubber strands in your bungee cords---makes them stiff, somewhat brittle. You'll notice when you replace your bungees again in a number of years when they are ready once again to be replaced that the smoke side will be less flexible than you non-smoking side.Carry on ![cid:image002.jpg(at)01CAFE5B.976D6B50]________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Smoke On!

Pietenpol-List: Smoke On!

This morning I finally got some videos (thanks to my wife, Karen) of thesmoke system I installed on my Pietenpol this spring. Check it out at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DTmKApOPywI won't be bringing my Pietenpol to Brodhead this year, but instead willbring Ryan Mueller's newly acquired Pietenpol that was owned by GenePennington in Camden, Tennessee. Gene sold the Piet to Ryan in April andhas already bought a single-seat Kolb Slingshot so he can still fly "low andslow".If the weather is good, one week from today I'll be chugging along somewhereover acres of corn in Illinois, with Randy Bush and his Corvair poweredPietenpol on my wingtip. I can hardly wait.Jack PhillipsNX899JP (but next week, N502R)Raleigh, NC________________________________________________________________________________

Pietenpol-List: Re: Piets in Texas

Hi all, I'm new to the Pietenpol group. I live in San Marcos (KHYI) and am startingmy Air Camper project. Last fall I ordered my plans and this spring I rescuedmy power plant from a rusting '65 Monza south of Bastrop. Also last yearI joined the Commemorative Air Force Centex Wing and Yellow Rose Squadron, whichstarted my appreciation of vintage aircraft. It only took one ride in our JapKate to propel my love of flying! My Piet project first started out as a team effort with my brother who lives inRound Rock after he told me about Mr. Pietenpol and the Air Camper. I decidedto go ahead and purchase the plans. Soon after we began looking for engines.Since then it appeared to me that what with work and being a family man and alsodonating time to the CAF that the Piet project was mine completely, oh darn.[Wink] Also being a member of the CAF, I have a great resource at my disposalwhat with our A&P and the skillful talents of our volunteers. Presently I've got my Corvair engine tore down and am in the gathering parts stage. My crank after getting cleaned up and checked for cracks is with a friendwho owns a machine shop being modified with the safety shaft. Soon I plan togo shopping for spruce. Is the Air Camper kit that Aircraft Spruce sells a goodbuy or should I look elsewhere? I look forward to sharing my project with youall.Kelly Klaus--------Kelly KlausRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Piets in Texas

I'm happy with the quality of the Aircraft Spruce wood package. If you have agood source of lumber, others will tell you how you can save a pile of bucks bycutting your own stock, but if you want a good quality package that includesmost of the required wood materials, the Aircraft Spruce isn't a bad idea atall. The wood package does not include the required capstrip for building ribs or anyof the plywood you will need. I think I've got a total of ~$1600 in all ofmy wood products, but it is good stuff, and I haven't had to go hunting for it.Perhaps someone else will chime in to inform you on which alternatives you mightbe able to find at the lumber yard.--------Mark ChouinardFinishing up Wings - Working on Center SectionRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Smoke On!

Hi Oscar,Since I have a battery to power the radio, transponder, intercom andAh-Oooooga horn, it made sense to use a pump system. So for smoke, I pressa button on the instrument panel which energizes a windshield washer pump onthe firewall, injecting smoke oil into a port welded onto the exhaust stackof the # 1 cylinder. The only thing unique about my system is the tank. I used an outboard motorportable fuel tank (3.5 gallons), with the typical outboard quick disconnectfuel line and squeeze primer bulb. That way, when I need to carry apassenger, I can just disconnect the line and pull the tank out of the frontcockpit. Installing it is simple - fill the tank with smoke oil, close thecap, position the tank on the front floorboard between the rudder pedals andsecure with a bungee cord, open the vent, connect the quick disconnect, givethe primer bulb a couple of squeezes and you're ready to go.For smoke oil I took a tip from a recent Sport Aviation article onskywriting and burn used automatic transmission fluid. I tried to buy someTexaco Canopus 13 oil like the big boys (Sean D Tucker and Mike Cuy) use,but you have to buy it by the 55 gallon drum, for $582 a drum. Used ATF oilis free. And as you can see from the video, it makes nice thick smoke.Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC-----Original Message-----

NX497AR Started construction in the 60s by Al Koons purchased my me in the mid90s with standard Ford power, added Funk head later fuel injection, sold enginefor a B Ford with all Funk accessories, pulled Ford to try Werner 145 for twoyears, back to Ford , then to a Lambert 90 , back to the Ford with fuel injectionand the Sensenich 76 X 47 prop. The fuselage is the short version, cowl fuel and center section tank. Many hours, much fun, more than a human should have.Pieti LowellPS, 612 wing since 2004Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Smoke On!

Jack; your experience parallels mine. I investigated purchase of the Texaco productsince I can purchase oil at bulk rates, but I wondered what I would everdo with 55 gal. of the stuff. My thought at the time was that I could decantit out from the drum into 5 gal. containers and then sell those to other smokers.Much easier to deal with that quantity. BTW, Shell now also has airshowsmoke oil availablehttp://www.shellusserver.com/products/pdf/Aero ... okeOil.pdf, but probably no better price than the Canopus oil. You sure can't beat usedATF; that's a good source. Here at my work, I could get practically unlimitedquantities of that.--------Oscar ZunigaSan Antonio, TXAir Camper NX41CCRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________
