Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: short fuse and A-65/CorvairPhilMy Piet is a short fuselage with a corvair. I am 200+ and have had a 200+ passenger. The ROC was not great but ok. My wing sets about four inches aft of vertical on the cabanes. Jim Ballew_pietn38b(at)aol.com_ (mailto:pietn38b(at)aol.com) In a message dated 7/18/2010 6:41:56 P.M. I'm REALLY set on either an A-65 or a Corvair engine. I understand that this might be an okay pairing, given the tail heaviness of the design. I'm about 180-185 and will be flying passengers smaller than me at all times, I'm pretty sure. Would a short fuselage work fine in this scenario? Would it be better, if I'm set on those engines, to build a longer fuselage myself? Thanks for any help.Phil________________________________________________________________________________

Phil,Mike Cuy's Lindy-winning Pietenpol has a short fuselage and an A-65Continental and flies very well indeed. I'm 200 lbs and have flown Mike'splane (as well as my own A65 powered long fuselage Pietenpol). In somerespects I think the short fuse is better (it's lighter). I'd say go forit.Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC-----Original Message-----

Looking good, Chuck! Very nice looking shop. I'm expecting to see an awardwinning Pietenpol coming out of such a shop.Hopefully I can come by and see it firsthand after Brodhead. Maybe I cancome with Jim Markle - he's going to be in the area. I'm sure there'ssomething in that shop he can use.Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC _____

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. One other question I have is whether the shortfuselage exacerbates or moderates the tendency to ground loop.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Neither. Those tendencies come from the pilot.Seriously, the distance between the mains and the tailwheel is insignifigantcompared to other things such as what kind of brakes are used, whether atailwheel or tailskid is used, etc.I've flown both and neither is particularly prone to groundlooping.Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC-----Original Message-----

Oh, I've already had my groundloop and it was in a long fuselage Pietenpol(mine), but it didn't groundloop because it was a long fuselage. Itgroundlooped because the axle broke.Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC-----Original Message-----

And my oil tempdoesn't get to 180F till I've been in the air cruising or climbingfor maybe 10-15 minutes or more. I think you're there.
