Okay, now here's one that I have experience with. Scout started out with littleor no engine offset, no vertical stabilizer offset, and a bent-metal ruddertrim tab. It helped, but feet needed to be on the rudder at all times and steadypressure was required to hold it straight in yaw while in cruise.By the way, I have reported on this in the past so I won't elaborate on it muchhere, but we first added vertical stab offset (as much as it would take withoutdistorting the trailing edge spar of the VS), and it helped but rudder wasstill needed at all times. Adding washers to the engine mounts to offset thethrustline helped much, much more and the bent metal tab is off the rudder now.It still needs a little rudder, but just a little. You can do a lot towardsmaking your airplane fly hands-off by adjusting the engine thrustline, bothin pitch and in yaw. It's well worth looking into if you haven't yet made yourengine mount, but even if you have, you can always play with the offset laterby using washers at the engine mount points. All of the above is for the smallContinentals... I have flown Scout with an A65 and now an A75.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Hi Douwe,I've been using "The Claw" tie-downs for years, with good results. They'vekept my Piet in place through some of the worst thunderstorms Brodhead, Sun'n' Fun and Oshkosh have offered. They're a bit pricey at about $90 a set,but they work. Their customer service is excellent as well.I have a pair of cockpit covers that my wife sewed for me that work verywell, but don't totally prevent water getting in the airplane. It stillcomes in around the holes in the cowling where the cabane struts meet thefuselage. I always carry a towel to help sop up the water that comes induring the Brodhead monsoon. I've never tied foam tubes on the wings. I dohold the controls by looping the seatbelt over the stick as Mike Cuysuggested, which holds the ailerons and elevator. I would like to have agust lock on the rudder but I don't.I do recommend a pitot tube cover to prevent rain from getting in your pitottube (ask Dan Helsper about that). It doesn't matter what you do. When you are lying in your sleeping bag atBrodhead, listening to driving rain and wind and horrendous "Cannon Shots"of thunder, you will wonder if your pride and joy will still be there in themorning. Amazingly, it always has been for me. We had a tornado within afew miles of Brodhead a couple of years ago, and I'm sure that as Gardinerfound out, no matter what kind of tie-down you have, it won't save you in atornado. Hopefully we'll never have such during the fly-in.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia _____

Very nice setup, clean stacks. Looking at the port that you have in the firewall,is that just there to give you access to the front pedals from the firewallside? I assume that you'll just have a flat circle or square screwed onto thefirewall to cover the hole? Although I guess you could pipe your relief tube out the firewall and into theheat muff to vaporize the relieved liquid. Gives a whole new meaning to the term"smoke system".All kidding aside, you have a very clean setup.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: tie downs for fly-ins...

Hi Douwe,Last year I bought "The Claw". Haven't used it yet due to I was lucky enough to get one of the two permanent tie down spots at Brodhead. The Claw is nice in the fact they give you a carrying bag, and a hammer included with the kit. And it is not unduly heavy.Dan HelsperPuryear, TN-----Original Message-----

Oscar, the port allows me access to the fuel shut off valve as well as the frontrudder pedals. The access hole is covered with a wood plug that exactly fitsthe opening. The plug in turn is attached to a metal plate the bolts to the firewall. The cover is easy to remove and once installed is invisible from insidethe cockpit. I resisted doing this for some time as I was concerned about theappearance, but I was more concerned about access to the fuel valve on my fronttank. After Kevin Purtee's incident, my friend Jim Hacklin decided he needed to pullhis front fuel tank on his nearly completed Piet in order to install a bettersump. Since he didn't have a firewall access port, and couldn't reach the fuelline disconnect from outside the cockpit, he had to crawl inside. If you canimagine crawling inside the front pit, rolling on your back on the skinny frontseat with your legs hanging over the side. Once the tank was free, he had tothen extracate himself. No one was home, he couldn't reach his cell phone, buthe had to get out or die. He said the longer he waited the worse it was getting,so he had to get out one way or another. He obviously got out to tell thetale, but that convinced me to add the access port.Rick SchreiberValparaiso, INSent from my iPadOn Mar 1, 2013, at 7:43 PM, "taildrags" wrote:> > Very nice setup, clean stacks.
