Seeing (and hearing) a Lancaster fly is like having four Spitfires (or Mustangs,or Hurricanes) flying in formation. Well Pieters...After many long years of pining for Texas, I am moving on or around July 1st toBeaumont Tx to take over the 2 county area (Jefferson and Orange Counties) forthe Baton Rouge Dale Carnegie Training organization as the partner in the businessthere. Can you believe my biggest desire/concern about the whole thing is that I finda rental property there that is big enough to build my Piet...? I have such aGREAT setup here: 3 acres and a finished Barn that is big enough to build theplane with wings ON..,.So, now I am thinking of how to move a fuse built ready for gear. I figure wrappingit in a tarp, lots of duct tape and fit it on the ceiling ties of a 26' UHaul.I saw our good friend and feller Pieter Oscar Zuniga towing it on a trailer, but I gotta do this in one shot. So, I am towing the car behind the UHaul, towing my CAR (now guys, THERE is where the priorities are shown!) and Jody(the goddess of the household) towing a travel trailer to live in on the way...We plan to sell much of the OLD furniture and keep much of my old tools (again, see a pattern?). I plan to attend the west coast Piet gathering in June, butthen it's CYA California... wish the best to my brothers in CA, but I am DONEwith this state.so, if anyone has moved a Piet project, I'm open for advice! Perhaps I will nowbe able to one day fly to Brodhead... Will have to look at a chart.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Ken, that trailer looks a bit minimal. (I think I spelled that correctly.) I recently had to move my entire project for a move of about 60 miles. Of course I had a bit more to move than you did. We acquired a 20-foot enclosed trailer and pulled it with a 3/4-ton pickup truck. It contained a partially complete fuselage, two finished wing panels and center section, 2 ailerons, 5 tail surfaces (none of the framework was covered), and an almost complete Corvair engine on a stand. Also had a few shop tools and some yet-to-be-used plywood plus a set of used T-craft wing struts in there. I should have taken pictures but failed to do so. Everything arrived at the destination in good shape. The trailer had some shelves on one side. They had to be temporarilly removed to make room for my stuff. It was just about a day's work doing all this. I would hate to have to move a project across several states. Good luck on your project. Mine has been on hold for a few months because of medical issues. Maybe I can get back at it in July. Not in time for Brodhead but maybe in time for Corvair College in South Carlina in November (I hope - I hope - I hope). Chuck ----- Original Message -----

Thanks guys.Ken, that little trailer gives me hope! I hope to squeeze it into a UHaul 26 footer along with the rest of my belongings...No wings yet, but some lumber that will become wings :o)Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: The Move to Beaumont Tx...

Mark;Interesting move... from the Golden State to the Golden Triangle ;o) You'll haveat least one interesting "neighbor"... Corky Corbett. He's right over in Shreveport(about 200 mi. due north from Beaumont), making Air Camper ribs.I have some advice on how to go about moving a Piet cross-country. Pretty simple:(1) find Steve Dortch and enlist his help, and (2) get busy ;o) You'll figureit out, but it sounds like you have a big undertaking ahead of you. A DaleCarnegie guy shouldn't have any trouble though.>From Beaumont, you'll be about 2.5 to 3 Piet days away from Brodhead. 1100 miles...10 fuel stops... couple of overnights. Subject: Pietenpol-List: A very Generous PietenpollerSome of you on the list might remember Brian Kenney from Broadhead several yearsago. Brian built C-FAUK and has been flying her for 26 years. This morning at our annual fly-in breakfast I was chatting with Brian and hintingaround that a ride in his Piet would be great motivation for me and the continuationof my build. Brian's trust and generosity were both evident when he simply suggested I climbin to his beautiful machine and take it around the pea-patch solo. I providetailwheel training on Cubs and Champs and have owned a Stinson for several yearsbut the exhilaration and visceral experience of taxiing out in an open cockpitmachine and seeing the big motorcycle wheels roll over the grass was incredible. The little 65 horsepower Continental was ample power to get the tailup quick on take off and establish a healthy climb. I did some gentle and mediumturns on the downwind and found the plane delightfully balanced and rudderfriendly. Seeing the fields below me framed in wing struts, drag cables andwooden landing gear was very inspiring. There was a quartering crosswind blowingfrom the left but a little crab and 70 mph felt good and the landing was quitetame and comfortable. I taxied back to the flight line and shut down with a feeling of elation and anamazing realization that the plane I am building is exactly the kind of planeI want to fly. I'm very stoked to finish my build and now have a true understandingof what awaits me and the end of the construction journey. Brian is representativeof the generosity and engagement of this great group. When I hopped(okay wriggled) out of the airplane with this stupid grin I couldn't wipeoff my face I immediately exclaimed to Brian that his airplane was an absoluteblast to fly. He smiled and told me that if more pilots tried flying a Pietthere would be plenty more examples of the airplane dotting the sky. I'm sure every Piet builder can relay a story of the "aha" moment when they realizedwhy they are working through the multitude of little projects that accumulateinto the final completion of a Pietenpol. Being able to visualize the rewardat the end of the build is an incredible motivator. I can say that todaywas my "aha" day. I now know why the fliers on this list keep on flying theirPeitenpols and can say I'm grateful for their continued feedback.Scott Knowlton Burlington ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: The Move to Beaumont Tx...

Just thought I would throw my name in, although East Texas is sorta the stepchildand that's okay with us. You'll find me building at 3F9 about midway betweenDallas and Shreveport. I'll mention that Mark McKeller up near Mt. Pleasantis now resuming his build. He sold me the Corvair I now have on my Piet, sohe will be starting fresh on another one. There may be a few of us ready towing our way to Brodhead in 2014... just hopin'. So Mark, welcome to the greatstare of Texas... fast becoming a major Piet sanctuary.--------Robert CaldwellRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Mark, I started out in a "basement" room about 16 X 16. When I outgrew that I moved the automobile out into the driveway and brought the project into our 20 X 20 2-car garage. When checking for squareness of the wing center section I moved the car into the street and used the garage and part of the driveway to temporarily put the 3 wing sections together. When I get ready to completely assemble the uncovered airplane to make sure it all goes together properly I'll have to wait for a few days of good weather and use the driveway to assemble everything. I even heard of one builder building a Piet in a 1-car garage. Don't believe I would want to do that. C----- Original Message -----

Built mine in a 2-car, in which my wife's car inhabited its 1/2 during theweek days. First homebuilt I recall seeing was when I was 16...a Dyke Deltabeing built in 1-car garage! Then, there was a guy in Australia building a601 in a cargo container! Moving's a lot of work, but it can be fun when it's for the rightreason....hope all works out well for you...Gary BootheNX308MB-----Original Message-----

I restored an L-2 in one bay of a two-car garage. Although I have a dedicated two car garage workshopit is not clear space. I have an ancient 72 drawerlibrary file cabinet which is topped with a left handedcabinetry workbench on one side, radial arm saw 8' bench, band saw, shop vac system in the middle, 14' x 4' lowbuilding bench on other side. That's just the basics soI was able to build tail, ribs, fuselage sides and some otherstuff inside. As soon as the fuse bits became a realbox there was no room to maneuver so the main buildarea is out in the backyard under a homemade 12X22'canopy. Now that I'm getting close to actually buildingthe wing panels there's going to be some creativefuselage moving soon.So all is not lost because there's no garage. A littlecreative will and maybe a little"I don't care what theneighbours think." mind bending can go a long way.If you do decide to make a canopy use silver tarps. They'll last a lot longer. The canopy pics show theevolution from the first simple cover to the final, tall, snow resistant one tall enough to clear thecenter section and rudder.I bought the fittings from a Harbour Frieght Canadianequivalent. They fit 1" emt tubing. The neighbours love having this old eccentric dudeworkin' away on an old timey airplane. I don't knowhow they'll cope when it's gone. Poor things!Clif> > I am very surprised to see so many houses there with no garage, much less a barn!>> So, I am wondering what you build in? > Rather spend that on plane parts!>> Still hoping for a large workshop, but that might be 2 years down the > road...________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: How many of you are building/have built in your 2car garag

It seemed like such a silly question to ask, but seriously, I have been spoiledby all the room in my barn. So, I'm trying to imagine what I am going to do toadjust. The only thing about tarp-style canopies is that they really don't do well in someof the wind and rain that sometimes gets to Beaumont, especially when thestorms have names ;o) I have a canopy similar to Clif's (but nowhere as cool),and even though it is rarely windy here, I had to anchor the legs of mine in5 gal. pails filled with gravel and I used what amounts to 4x4 wood legs forthe uprights because I wanted to brace the legs and the thin wall tubing thatcame with the canopy couldn't take it.Now in its 3rd season of use, the canopy material has limbered up and the stitchholes are large enough for water to get in when we have steady rains. I'm goingto lay it on the ground this summer and apply heavy "duck tape" down allthe seams to see if I can restore the water tightness. I can do many shop tasksoutside under my canopy, but only when it's not the rainy season because thingscan get wet under there. I would say that a dedicated builder could do thefirst 95% of the work in half of a 2-car garage and some outdoor canopy space. The last 95% has to be done with the wings on, and that means a hangar orbarn;o)--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: How many of you are building/have built in your 2car garage

Well Gents, that is encouraging.I have really enjoyed the barn, but for the next 2 years or so I will be lookingat renting, so I will have to take what I can get. I will look into buildingsomething when we finally buy down there (supposing the world hasn't flung itselfapart by then!) if I can't find a property that is set the way we'd like.BUT, I don't mind parking out on the drive way and building in the garage. I justwasn't sure there really IS enough space for the bulk of it. Once it's readyto assemble, I can see a hanger would be best. Thanks fellers!MarkRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Well, today another long held dream came true as my lovely wife became thefirst passenger I personally have flown in "RE-PIET"!! We have tried four or five times lately to find a "weather window" but withthis kooky weather, it just wasn't happening. Until tonight!Absolutely perfect evening. Zero wind, perfectly smooth a few cloudslingering to reflect the sunset colors and about eighty degrees on theground.RE-PIET took off and climbed with Marci and ten gallons of fuel almost likeI was alone and it didn't feel any different, except that I have to keep alittle more power through the flare to keep from dropping out. Flew forabout forty five minutes, followed the Licking River south and watched somefarmers plowing, buzzed some fields then flew over our house and smoked ourdaughter while she jumped on her trampoline. It really was awesome. Here are a couple of pics, and I'm posting a videoon YouTube which shows some pretty evening scenery and the takeoff from thefront pit.The video will probably be viewable in a day or two. I don't have a linkyet, but it's titled. "Pietenpol RE-PIET first flight with wife!"Keep building, it's worth it!!Douwe________________________________________________________________________________Date: Sun, 19 May 2013 21:36:12 -0600Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: First flight with wifey!
