Pietenpol-List: A Spoked Wheel Question

I have a question for you Piet-ple flying with wire wheels. William Wynne is rebuildingmy gear as he replaces the bungees with die springs. He needs to knowthe height of the tire from ground to the top of the tire on the wire wheels.I measured P.F. Beck's and Don Harper's in Barnwell while at Corvair College #27this past weekend. They are both running 19 inch rims and they measure 25 inchesfrom ground to level with the top of the tire. So-1. Is there a preference in running 19 or 21 inch rims?2. What is the height of your tire and what size rim and tire are you using? Thanks in advance for the info!--------Semper Fi,Terry HandAthens, GARead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Terry,There is no preference that I know of. If the landing gear is alreadybuilt, the 21" wheels will give a slightly higher deck angle than 19"wheels, which means the plane is more fully stalled when landing. I preferthis, so the plane is stalled at the 3-point attitude, but it does make itmore difficult to get consistently smooth landings. I learned to fly in a J-3 Cub years ago and it has a fairly high deck angle.Later, when I owned a Cessna 140 I was frequently landing it tailwheelfirst, trying to get it stalled at touchdown. So I built my Pietenpol toabout the same deck angle (as I recall it was 13 degrees) as the Cub.My rims are 21 x 3.00 and the top of the tire is 26-3/4" above the ground.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----

NX18235 is using 19" rims with 3.50 tires. Tire height is approx. 26" and the deck angle is 12.5 degrees. This is good for three point landings at slow speeds but, like Jack says, it is hard to get consistently smooth landings.Greg Cardinal----- Original Message -----

Love those wooden cabanes! Looks like he repositioned the mounting point for theforward cabane attach brackets at the fuselage moved back about 3/4" or so.Wonder what that was about. Also, no center section flop. Does he have a cutout?--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: A Spoked Wheel Question

I've got 19" wheels. With Avon Speedmaster 2.75/3.00 tyres (yes, their British),the diameter is 25". Deck angle is 11 degrees. No landings to report.
