Hi Guys,Surprisingly, our local version of Home Depot (Bunnings Aerospace!) had some Goof Off. I bought some of that and a small bottle of De-Solv-It, a citrus desolving solution. The Goof Off worked well, even for the Poly Brush but is going to take some time. Much better than MEK through. The De-Solv-It worked well with the masking tape but didn=92t touch the Poly Brush. Smelt nice though Oscar! Thanks for the response=92s looks like we have a solution (???) to the problem.CheersPeterOn 9 Nov 2013, at 6:17 am, Steven Dortch wrote:> Remember guys, MEK is bad stuff if absorbed into the skin or breathed. But I really pay more attention when I open it, wear gloves and make sure I don't breath the fumes. The active ingredient is limonene, which is a by-product of the processing of citrus (lemon, orange, grapefruit, etc.). It's supposed to be a pretty good solvent, is safe to use, and of course it smells better than MEK ;o)> > --------> Oscar Zuniga> Medford, OR> Air Camper NX41CC "Scout"> A75 power> > > > ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Is it worth buying materials from Aircraft Spruce?

I'll soon be tackling my build and have decided to start with the fin and rudder.Should I get the wood from A.S. or elsewhere? I'm just not sure how complete theA.S. 'kits' are. For example, their fin and rudder kit includes:3 x 02-341 CAPSTRIP 3/4" X 1"4 x 02-58114 CAPSTRIP 5/8" X 1-1/4"I know this doesn't include glue and other hardware, so what else is needed, asidefrom the above?I live very close to their Canadian HQ so have the luxury of being able to drivea short distance to pick everything up.Apologies if this seems like a remedial questions. It's all new!Jim.--------Your nose is high; you're in the sky. It doesn't include a piece of pine or whatever you want to make top front of fin( curved/carved). Most importantly, no practice pieces!... Yes, it is ;o)But more to the point: I live in Douglas fir country (Oregon). I can get as muchas I want, in whatever quality I want, very inexpensively (or even free). I like working with it, although it has its drawbacks. For spars or planks, Iwill use fir. For smaller pieces, drilling straight holes in it parallel tothe grain is difficult because the lines between the grains are hard and theydeflect the drill bit. It splinters easily, too, so you have to be very carefulwhen sawing it or the cuts will splinter instead of cutting clean. However, the main thing is that the tail is where you want the airplane to be aslight as possible, and fir weighs more than spruce when you're using the samesize pieces. For as little as you need to build the tail pieces, use spruce. If you build the tail heavy, your airplane will be dragging it around for therest of its life. I should know; I'm known as "tail drags" ;o) My other projectis an M-19 Flying Squirrel and almost every piece of wood in it is fir. This is how I know about the love/hate relationship with fir.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Perfect. That would just fit with my current landing style. [Laughing] It sounds like 26" +/- would be a good number, giving me the option of the 21 inchrims with a more deck angle, but a little less if I were to find good 19 inchrims. In other words, a compromise between P.F. and Don's 25 inch height, and Jack's 26 and 3/4 inch.--------Semper Fi,Terry HandAthens, GARead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Is it worth buying materials from Aircraft Spruce?

Oh---and by the way......if you note in ASS Co's (Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co.)full page ($$$$) ads in Sport Aviation.....they claim "LOWEST price guarantee"so checkout the Wicks catalog and if you find the wood cheaper (or anything) makesure you make Aircraft Spruce hold good to their word about pricing.Mike C.[cid:image001.png(at)01CEDE18.5961B500]________________________________________________________________________________

Usually the reason for buying all at once is to save on shipping costs, which because of the length of the spars and sheets of ply and aluminum and all can add up. But if you live nearby a supplier then just going by and getting what you need when you need it can make a lot more sense. Only a small percentage of airplanes are completed by the person who originally started the project. You can find partially built projects selling for a fraction of the money the original builder had invested in them, some selling them at really low prices just to find the project a new home. It happens for a variety of reasons too., If you don=99t buy everything up front and decide, or some situation decides for you, that you can=99t finish your plane then you are not out as much money.Dennis
