Pietenpol-List: center strut - rear attach brackets

i'm confused with the connection between the rear center struct brackets and the fuselage. Theres a 3/4 x 1/2 member that goes between the two fuselage sides and is then covered with plywood for the instrument panel. The CC brackets appear to sever this member pretty much completely. Is this right? not that I think that that little member transfers a ton of energy but it seems strange that it would be cut off at the ends to make room for the brackets to slide through. this is where the front seat back is attached to as well.Any insights?Tom Brant ________________________________________________________________________________

Tom,Out of hundreds of pictures, I thought I had things pretty wellcovered=85until I go to look for something like that!I did find a picture that seemed to confirm what you describe. The seat backfor the front cockpit supports that member, and eventually all are tied inagain with the hoop for the turtle deck. I suggest cutting the plywoodbottom for the instrument panel, notched for the fittings, then add the =BD=94member.Gary BootheNX308MB

Gary and Tom,That=92s what I did. The =BD=94 spruce piece supports the front seatback, butstops short of the cabane strut fittings. It transfers the load to theplywood shear web on top of the longerons. I don=92t have a good picture thatshows the spruce piece, but here=92s a photo of the general area:As you can see, I laminated the hoops that support the cowling, but had tostop the one that makes the top of the front seatback short in order toclear the rear cabane struts.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia _____

Subject: Pietenpol-List: center section wing tankI made a center wing tank using closed end rivets and sealed. I never could get the leaking to completely stop. I took my leaking gas tank to an aluminum boat builder and ask him to use my tank as a pattern . He told me hewould not build me a gas tank , but if I wanted a water tank he would be glad to do it.$250 got me a nice looking water tank that is installed in my airplane as a gas tank. It looks great and doesn't leak.Ted Stone________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: center strut - rear attach brackets

Its ridiculous how simple this is... I only wish I'd have thought to ask the question before I cut the cross member : (Thanks allDate: Tue=2C 28 Jan 2014 16:15:54 -0800

Tom,Don't beat yourself up. It's a non-structural part and of no consequence.Besides, there is always a price to pay for changes. For example, if I hadmoved my wing back 1" more, the aileron control cables would have come rightthru the wind screen.or, at least, it would have been even harder to designthe screen to the size I wanted.Gary BootheNX308MB

Just glue a piece behind the one you cut if it makes you feel better. I cutthe piece as well as everyone else who has the fitting in that location.Chris
