We just completed the Really First Official West Coast Pietenpol Gatheringat Frazier Lake Skypark, Ca! (And, Yes, there really is a "Frazier Lake"seaplane base for all you amphib Pietenpolers!). This event was held inunison with Frazier Lake's monthly Display Day, making it possible to seeand visit with airplanes and owners of some really cool stuff. We actually had 3 flying Piets, 2 of which all of you Brodheaders have seen(#.1554, Pietenpols as far as you can see.).Special thanks to Mike Groah for helping to organize the event, and extraspecial thanks to Charlie Miller and his wonderful wife and family forhosting EVERYTHING! Personally great for me, was to have my son Ryan go up with Charlie inRyan's first open cockpit ride (#...1108). Ryan is the good looking guy onthe right. He is smiling for obvious reasons. Charlie is the dashing piloton the left. Charlie is smiling because he just saved, with masterfulpiloting skills, his beautiful Pietenpol from a near catastrophic landingfrom a x-wind gust.To our great enjoyment, and making it a truly sanctioned Pietenpol event, wewere blessed with the ubiquitous JIM MARKEL!! Since WE are neophytes when itcomes to Piet gatherings, and our conversations sometimes stray from thepoint of the whole affair, Jim has the notorious special talent of steeringthe conversation back to Pietenpols, and how these little airplanes add tothe meaning of life.I'm sure there is no connection, but after Jim had left, on Sunday morning, one of the local hanger owners wandered over to our camping area and askedif anyone had seen his air compressor.seems it was 'lost.' I assured himthat these kinds of events are common at Piet gatherings, and that I wassure that the air compressor wasn't really 'lost'..Sorry, I did a poor job of photo essaying everything, and am hoping some ofmy fellow builders did a better job!Gary Boothe Cool, Ca. Pietenpol WW Corvair Conversion, mounted Tail done, Fuselage on gear (19 ribs down.) ________________________________________________________________________________

Jack,#54 is a pic of Scott Liefeld's Piet/GN1 hybrid. Note on the next pic how hehas modified his control cable to be external.that's why the routing thruthe stab. Interestingly, because of this, he has a HUGE baggage compartmentbehind the pilot seat!#59 is just a pic of his aileron cable fairing. I suspect they areoptional. I think he said his wings are cub wings, so the cable routing istypical for that wing (whichever it was).Gary BootheCool, CAPietenpolWW Corvair ConversionTail done, Fuselage on gear18 ribs done

I would like to add my thanks to Mike Groah and Charlie Miller for a well run event at a fine location. The planes=2C the food and especially the fellowship were all superb. As was said=2C it gave a chance to make list names real people with good ideas and nice personalities. I would also like to thank the pilots who brought their planes to the meet. I hope next year even more will come and there will be a chance to pick up even more ideas to make our own projects better. Maybe some day Mike and I will have our plane there as well. (who knows=2C it may get done some day) If I put in enough more money and time I may even get to own 41% and even get a ride. Set aside some time for the west coast meet next year. Maybe Jim can come back and get some air tools to go with the compressor. Thanks to all that came and made the meet a success. Vic Groah MX414MV

Hi Chuck,I am also an EAA Tech Counselor. I have been doing it for the past 15 years orso and I am glad to hear that you are getting some outside help from all possibleresources. Kudo's to you.If I came out and looked at you wings, I would also refer you to 43.13 and suggestnew spars. But keep in mind that EAA Tech Counselors can only offer suggestionsand help you make safe building decisions. I have found many unsafe conditions, even in the Kit airplanes. Don't beat yourself up over it. The advice from this group is right on and certainly makes this forum worth itsweight in gold. Keep listening and asking questions and you will have a niceairplane that you will feel safe flying in and be proud of.--------Scott LiefeldFlying N11MS since March 1972Steel TubeC-85-12Wire WheelsBrodhead in 1996Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: West Coast Pietenpol Gathering

Hey Guys & Gals,I have spent the last two days trying to get my turtle deck to look right. I havebeen through this list and West Coast Piet and have seen some beautiful work, but I can't find a good explanation on how to measure and cut to get it asstraight as possible. Help needed!I have been through a bunch of poster board trying different methods. Thanks, Charlie! The fly In was great this last Saturday. Thanks for hosting it! I really enjoyed seeing your Piet again and also Mike Madrid's. Both are beautiful and a great example of hard work and persistence. I know you did not build yours, Mike; but you do a great job maintaining it. It was great of you to fly it all the way from Lompoc..,... of course, that is not as far as going to Osh!Thanks for the great grub. I did not see a donation jug anywhere? Can we make a contribution to the food fund? I asked several people and nobody knew anything!Had a great trip home to Colusa. Let me know whenever anyone wants to get together, or fly somewhere together. I have foolishly planned a target date of next Summer to fly my Sky Scout! Thanks again for al the fun!Ray KrauseFlying the Waiex and building the Sky Scout ----- Original Message -----

Well for what it's worth to the group, here is some files I created 2 years agoto potentially sell Riblett GAU30-612 rib jigs. I plotted the DAT files thathave been posted here before in my CAD software and the jig files were createdto be punched on a CNC router. My '613.5' jig was popped out this way and that'swhat I am building on.So, this is posted "as-is". It is accurate to the dat files I was given (and thecoorinates posted here as well), so have at it.As to the spar dimentions, they are spaced at 27.75" as per the original plans, and the internal struts and wing elements were dimensioned from the originalpiet FC-10 airfoil that I purchased (i.e.: The measurements for all related partswas taken from the original plans and copied to the new airfoil... so, howeverfar the spar was from the front of the airfoil, that's how far it was onmy plans...) I have chosen to fil the entire spar locations on my design topto bottom with a spar, as I am making my wing longer than plans (please, no flames:o) I am a heretic. Also, the attached DXF includes routing for the glue pots beneath the intersectionswhere the glue can drop down and not stick to the jig surface. That is whatthe 'pots' reference is for: glue "pots" beneath the junctions.Hope this helps anyone building a Riblett 612 airfoil! I had a great time. Thank you to all involved. It was great to have seven shipsthere and more people than could be counted. The food was outstanding andthe surprise campfire on Sat made far a great evening. I got to fly a whole 10hours in one weekend, now I'm in a recovery mode. It was great flying twoship halfway home with Mike Grogh, smooth air all the way to his place. The remainingdistance was a bit of challenge with rough air then flying through 3or 4 miles of thick smoke to find my home field. Inhaling the smoke was notfun, but home safe. Those who didn't get rides this year are first in line fornext year. Just come up to me and say (it's my turn). Absolute fun time. I would avoid white. I know it reflects light the best of any color and lightens up the shop for the least outlay of lighting dollars and you will be able to easily find anything you drop but every hair will look like a crack and it will always look dirty. Being a tilesetter I know the first two words out of a baby girls mouth aren't goo-goo or mama or dada they are "white grout" which they dwell on in the back of their mind until they have a white tile floor or die whichever comes first and then every hair looks like a crack and every speck of dirt becomes an earth shattering experience until they get new tile. The cleaning becomes an obsession.dennis-----Original Message-----

Gary;Lives there the pilot who has not endured an ignominious scrape between gracefulgossamer and rough earth (or pavement)? Our airplanes are really quite delicatethings when you look at them. I was shocked, shocked to see and handle Scout'swings when they were not rigidly braced by the cable X's and wing struts, and to see the fuselage sitting on a trailer with no wings mounted. Reallya small and light craft, and a lot of flex when any single member is damagedor removed.I have felt like a small and light human while sitting in the cockpit, traversingsome thermals and turbulence and wind. The whole thing is really quite amazingwhen you look at it. The strength comes from the geometry, not from sheermass. If you take away any of the geometry, the thing collapses like a $2 suitcase.Take a look at the "Pietenpile" from Sun N Fun a few years ago, or thecrumpled wing of Mountain Piet. Without the rigidly triangulated structure, the airplane is nothing but a bag of bones inside a very thin fabric bag.Still, it is amazing and it is forgiving, and now you have one more story to tellover a pint of microbrew. "There I was, flat on my back, sun in my face, whenI felt the Hun's hot breath on my tail... and felt the sting of hot lead tracea row of holes through my wing spar." OK, so it's a crack in the spar andnot a row of 7.92mm bullet holes ;o)--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: West Coast Pietenpol Gathering

Jeff; that's the reason I asked the question. My A65 had cooling eyebrows butdidn't have intercylinder baffles. I added those later. When I changed enginesI took the eyebrows off the 65 and put them on the 75 but I never liked them...too many metal fatigue failures of mounting tabs, they stuck up too high, plus my hangar mate pointed out to me that there were large gaps all around theeyebrows, as well as in the rear and at the spark plug holes. So... I nowhave repro Cub eyebrows and they fit very snugly all around. I also installedrubber seals around the spark plug access holes to contain the cooling air. This is shown on my website, here:http://www.flysquirrel.net/piets/engine/eyebrows.htmlI do not have CHT readout on my engine, but I think I now have the cooling basescovered as well as I can.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: West Coast Pietenpol Gathering

Decision has been made: I will not be at Frazier Lake this year. Last WednesdayI had the airplane over to Beagle Sky for Steve Pankonin, the A&P, to do thecondition inspection. Although he signed me off, there are a couple of squawksthat he would like for me to take care of, and one of those almost groundedthe airplane. Steve let me go on the assurance that I would take care of it,and I will, but I'm not going to fly over the mountains or in bumpy air withit like this. One of the lower strut attachment fork ends is bent. I know when it happened, because it's been like this since the nose-over in 2004. See photo, attached.Pay no attention to the mis-matched paint over that fabric patch... I have sometouch-up to do here and there, and that is just the first coat. Anyway, thethreaded end of the fork is stout and it may be just fine like that forever.I'm going to replace it.What really chilled me was that I pulled the airplane into Steve's hangar and removedall the inspection covers, cowlings, and access plates with the anticipationthat Steve wouldn't find much, if anything, amiss. Almost as if he wasclairvoyant, he walked over to the engine with his inspection light and startedwiggling things on the carb. He called me over and pointed to the castellatednut that holds the throttle cable ball-end to the throttle lever. No cotterpin, and the nut was only holding on by a couple of threads. Had it taken mejust a few more minutes to fly from Medford to Beagle Sky, that nut would havewalked off and I would have either made a dead-stick landing or had to managewild and unpredictable power by using the mag switches. For the next fourhours I pretty much just shut up and answered Steve's questions as he and I wentthrough the airplane. I also didn't feel like much of a hotshot mechanic anymore, either.Steve wants me to mount the ELT more securely in the tail, he wants to see thatfork end replaced, he wants me to shim the axles to correct some slight misalignmentof the camber on both of the mains, and one or two other little things. The rest of the inspection went almost flawlessly, and the engine cylinderleakdown test showed 79-79-78-79 so that went well.So... with Frazier Lake off my calendar, the next best thing is for me to makea Saturday or Sunday flight down to the Sacramento area to visit "the locals",as well as a flight up to the Salem area to visit all the pilots and buildersthat I know around Independence Airpark. Those will be manageable one-day summerfly-outs in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, I'll be thinking about cotter pinsand stupidity.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: West Coast Pietenpol Gathering

I realize it won't solve the problem of trying o maintain a more level fuselageangle and still get the angle of attack on the wing right. but as long as theCG figures prove it to be safe would you not think about putting a few poundst the tail post? might give you a little better indication of how it will performwith more neutral stick pressure but for sure the thrust angle will be lookingup. but then I have no doubt t has been anyway since you have to maintainthat wing angle to get the needed lift.
