I can't find where 5 to 7 is normal, but it seems there really isn't any otherexplanation than not enough clearance. We do have modern pistons in a old fordblock... and completely agree that 5 to 7 isn't too much. Many manuals don'trecommend reboring until well over 8 thousanths oversize as long as the cylinderisn't tapered or out of round. One more thing to check is piston ring gap. Off the top of my head I'm thinking20 thou is pretty normal. If the rings were causing excess friction, that couldheat up the piston to where 3 thou clearance isn't enough. The easiest way to check is pull a ring, put it in the cylinder and then use afeeler gage on the gap. Doesn't seem likely, but worth checking.I imagine your engine shop will tell you this, but just to be sure, boring a fewthousanths like that is extremely hard. Boring to within a thou is pretty easy, but only if you're taking 10 or more altogether... they'll most likely honethe cylinders to the size you want. You really can do this yourself, but you do need a decent bore gage. May not beworth getting the $150 hone and $100 bore gage, but otherwise the job reallyisn't that big of a deal. Wish you were nearby, would be a fun afternoon project.Hope this fixes the problem!Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Flying to brodhead 2014.

Hi Tools,Eggsellent!I am still planning on making the trip from 2GA9, Snellville, GA. My roughcalendar plan is similar to yours. Do you have a reason for Sullivan as anovernight stop? Is there a grass strip you plan to use (Drake?). Idpreviously planned to make my first stop 3M5 (Moontown) as its grass, would make a good first leg (about 2-2.5 h) and would get me west of mostof the Blue Ridge Mountains.Thanks,Jeff--Jeffrey H. Jeff, If Moontown is your first stop, we could meet up at our first stop, m54, Lebanon. They've got a grass runway, been there a few times. We had 3 legs to Sullivan, didn't get started until noon or so and had a long sitenroute. You'd have four to get that far north... Still not hung up on Sullivan, just havn't scoured the sectional for a nearby stripthat's grass. Maybe Shawnee (1i3)? Not sure where Drake is...Douwe,The fields you mention are a bit out of our way. Looks like you're skirting Indianapolisto the north, if you do the same to the south, our paths get prettyclose.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Thu, 12 Jun 2014 08:12:25 -0700 (PDT)

Hi Tools,M54 is one of two options Id been planning for my second stop I reallyprefer grass for anything other than early morning or evening landings asmy mains are simple motorcycle wheels from some unknown 60s bike, probablywith much less lateral strength than what is needed.Another option is that I could make Lafayette my first stop. Its about1.5 hours from 2GA9, which would be a decent opening to the journey. Whattime do you hope to depart? If its super early, maybe Id fly up theevening before or some such. After work, Ill send you a complete list of enroute options that Ivebeen pondering and get your take on them. This is coming together nicely.Jeff--Jeffrey H. I was contacted by the Hatz guys who have their fly in colocated with ours at Brodhead.Kevin Conner (I hope I have his name right) has been working with thehomebuilt coordinator at EAA for a couple years and finally has a "vintage homebuilt"sort of area set up.An area for planes like the Hatz, Fly Baby's, Tailwinds, and of course the grandpuba of vintage homebuilts, Piets! It's a great idea.He has invited as many Piets that want to park there, to park there. There's alsoa little "show area" where we've been invited to park a plane, so hopefullyone of the show planes come along. He's putting together an email of exactly what the arrangement is, that I'll repostas soon as I get it. If we can get some posters made, we'll display themthere, if not, I'll just borrow the ones from the Piet hangar at Pioneer. Kevin will be at Brodhead and would like to address the entire group about whathe has going, so all the finer details can be acquired then (like where to actuallytaxi once you land). Not a "sign up" sort of thing (the parking). Whoever shows, shows.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Flying to brodhead 2014.

Oh, and Wendel's place can host as many as come along. Can probably get two, maybethree in his hangar. He might be flying up as well... he's got a REALLYnice RV8, he'll probably take off directly for KOSH so would likely be leavingwell after us. If anyone is in the mood to try landing at our place, can get quite a few undercover. Probably worth landing at Wendel's, then coming over to look over thefield in person and then deciding for yourself. It's quite a climb after landing...However a very easy approach with no obstacles.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Flying to brodhead 2014.
