Subject: Pietenpol-List: radiatorsHello,On an A-powered Piet, has anyone ever tried putting the radiator behind the prop as on a jenny? I've been told there isn't enough room and it would cut down the effectiveness of the prop. Any ideas?Thank youMike Johnston,Plainview Minnesota________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: radiatorsMike,Some years back someone put the radiator behind the prop in a scaled down Jenny replica that used aModel A engine. It was a very nice looking installation. As it turnedout, the radiator behind the prop didn't interfere with the efficiencyof of the prop as much as the prop interfered with the efficiency of theradiator. They ended up having to add another good sized radiator inthe cooling air outlet from the cowl, underneath the engine.Another consideration is the fact that you would have to extend thecrankshaft out far enough to allow for the radiator, making propellerbalance of paramount importance.Lauren________________________________________________________________________________

Though I cannot say for sure, I am fairly confident that the Forrest Lovelyrad is (was, he won't make 'em anymore) a double row as it was close to fourinches thick. I have a brass three row rad for sale which I bought from Lowell Frank forextra cooling which has never been used, it anyone is interested. I have aContinental now so don't need it, but it sure should cool anything outthere. Thanks all for the input re cowling access, it's all pretty much as I thoughand I will lean heavily on your advice as this cowl progresses.Had great progress this week, have the cowling and grill hanging from theairframe and it positioned perfectly around the engine and seems really niceand secure. I've split the cowling so it divides top and bottom using pianohinges. Designed and build a really cool 1930's looking grill that lookslike it came off an old Jaguar or something for the front, and that'll splitacross the prop as well so this should all be pretty easy to remove.Wings done, gotta plumb the new engine and finish the installation, rebuildmy axle/wheel/brake set up, recover the fuselage, repaint the fuselage andpossibly enlarge my fuel tank a bit. Doubt we'll be ready for Brodhead withall the work I have, but I'm over the self-imposed deadline thing. My onlydeadline is to 'touch the Piet every day" and when I do that, I find itmoves forward slowly but surely.Douwe________________________________________________________________________________
