Subject: Pietenpol-List: A65-8 Piston RingsDear Chaps,My Continental A65-8, has recently had a top end overhaul, following which Iam now investigating uneven cylinder temperatures. It might be a mixturething as plugs in one cylinder are lighter brown than others, but could alsobe due to piston rings. Each piston has two compression rings, and a third oil scraper ring. At thebottom of each piston is a fourth oil scraper ring. The only difference Ican see between the compression rings and the oil scraper rings is that thescraper rings have had one of the outside corners removed, leaving a verysmall square channel, or step. I believe that the top oil scraper ringshould have this step facing downwards, and the bottom one should have itfacing upwards. Could anybody please confirm if this is correct and maybeprovide a brief explanation?I also need a spare scraper ring because I have broken one, but one sourceof information suggests I "will be alright" just using an old compressionring in its place. Doesn't sound right to me - but would appreciate anyinput.Anybody know where I could get some spare scraper rings? Thanks and regards,Mike HayesG-BKVO---------------------------------------------------------------------------This message and any associated files sent by Denco Limited are confidential, and intended only for the addressee named above.
