I'm sure there have been numerous Piets powered by radials over the years. Backin the early days they were likely more common, since small radials were alsomore plentiful. Today, aside from the Rotec, pretty much the only small radials(under 100HP) available are all 70+ years old. I recall reading in ChetPeek's book "the Pietenpol Story", about BHP powering at least one Air Camperwith a Velie radial.Attached is a clip from a 1993 magazine, of a radial-powered Piet based at Brodhead.Bill C.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/nx98 ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Merlins X 6

There are a total of 2 flying in the world. That would have been london where you saw yours. The other one lives at Hamilton airport in Ontario.CB----- Original Message -----

Ah, yes. Pat Bay Airport, Now officially VictoriaInternational. Late 1950's. I would ride my bike out to thebig curve in the road off the end of 03. The one with thetraffic lights that went red when a plane was coming in.Sitting right in the middle as the local squadron practicedin their Lancs. A few of them flew these wonderful thingsin the war but many had been in Halifax's. At this timethese guys weren't so respectful of these "old planes".They wanted newer, more modern stuff. So there I'd be, drinking in the wonderful sound, sightand smell as one would pass low over my head onfinal and shortly meet the runway. THE BOYS WERENOT GENTLE!! They banged them down hard! I meanhard enough to bounce ten or more feet in the air andmore than once, every time! Same with the Canso's ( PBY )in the bay. If anyone did that now, of course, they'dbe summarily shot!ClifAh, the good old days> >> Seeing (and hearing) a Lancaster fly is like having four Spitfires (or > Mustangs, or Hurricanes) flying in formation. For a big old bomber, it > can really perform, capable of reaching speeds of almost 300 mph.>________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Merlins X 6I have the privilege of living 10 miles from the Hamilton Warplane Heritage Museumwhere there is a flying example of the Lancaster as well as the B25 Mitchellalong with several WW2 fighters. On many a long weekend I'll duck my headout of the workshop or look up from the garden as the drone of four or more Merlinsfills the air. I never take the sight or sound for granted. My visiting mother who grew up in Germany and was a young child during the secondwar doesn't share my appreciation for "the dark beast" when it passes overhead!Scott Knowlton -----Original Message-----

The most awesome sound and sight I've ever saw was at hamilton airshow 2012. B-29 "FI-FI", Lancaster Bomber, B-17 bomber, B-25 bomber and P-51 mustang all in formation thundering over the runway for a photo shoot...... It's the only place in the world that you'll ever see a B-29 and a lancaster bomber in formation----- Original Message -----
