Ah. I see. Ned, looking at the schematic I'm missing one small item in my homebrewsetup. I do not have electrical continuity between the 'ground' or bottomlegs of the two transformer windings. Of course the ground side of the jackis grounded since it's mechanically fastened to my little metal box, but theouter conductor of my jack and that leg on the 8 ohm output side of the xfmris floating. I'll have to make that connection to the box and see if the noiseimproves.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Bob's Pietenpol flies

Interesting. It looks like there are no cooling air scoops on that engine. Isthat correct? The jugs just hang out in the breeze and that's it?--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

I noticed that, too. I encourage all who do this to install CHT sensors onall four cylinders and get back to us with the data;)My store-bought engine eyebrows have clearance holes for the rear cylinderspark plug wires. I found that just leaving the holes unsealed caused ameasurable temperature difference; the rear cylinders were about 50degrees warmer. Just putting rubber over those holes got temps down. Priorto this Ive had to grind valves on both rear cylinders AND overhaulentirely one of the two. And these are not that old!The Rose Parakeet traditionally does not have eyebrows. Ive read on theParakeet website that all those engines end up having valve problems forthe rear cylinders. The Mooney Mite does not have eyebrows on Continental engines but does onLycoming engines. A resto websites notes that the Continentals but not theLycs need the rear but not front cylinders overhauledCaveat: These groups have small sampling sizes, so theres no statisticalsignificance (probably); maybe its all just by chance and all those rearcylinders were just unlucky." However, if you install CHT probes for eachcylinder, at least youll know whether there are differentials on yourindividual engine.--Jeffrey H. Gardiner; The eyebrows that were on the plane originally were scratch-built by Corky. Theones that are on it now are built to the Piper Cub patterns. In the image thatI've attached, I have one of each installed on the engine and you can seethe difference in the amount of air that they grab. I figured thousands of Cubscan't be wrong with the lower ones, so I went with them and it has reducedthe drag and improved the engine cooling since they fit tighter.About the intercylinder baffles, everyone that I've asked (people that I know andrespect) have told me to use them. They keep the air from shooting down betweenthe cylinders without doing any cooling, and they also push the air aroundthe bottoms of the cylinders. As Jeff posted earlier, without getting coolingair evenly to all the cylinders and all around each cylinder, they can develophotspots. I'm just trying to do everything I can to make the engine happy, and the cost and effort to do these little cooling improvements is really notvery significant.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/eyeb ... ______Date: Mon, 2 Jun 2014 04:09:40 -0700 (PDT)
