Douwe=2C I have rebuilt dozens=2C if not hundreds of these things. Do it yourself=2C it really is a no-brainer. It is all remove and replace=2C no adjustments. The rebuild kits are not expensive (or they didn't use to be). Just disassemble and clean=2C reassemble with new jets and gaskets and you are there. the shaft bushings are the only parts that wear. Ifr you replace the shaft bushing=2C you need a ream for that=2C but it is the most challenging (not) part of the procedure.Gene

Dan,For what it's worth, I'd buy some shielding and give that a try. I put my antenna in the same location on N502R and had wonderful results. Over 50 miles on a handheld while I was at 500 feet AGL.
